The Big Idea: The Compassion Process Learning Framework

DeeDee explains that communication problems often come down to people reacting to how something was said instead of paying attention to what is actually needed. Moving beyond the reaction requires engaging intentionally toward the desired outcome, and that process begins internally.

According to DeeDee, people engage in internal communication that influences what they do next. If a leader tells themself that a situation is unfair, for instance, that belief will guide the response. By slowing down to consider the context and the desired outcome, they have more room to respond with care and precision.

This thinking led DeeDee to develop the CPL framework—Compassion, Process, and Learning—which she uses to bridge divides, improve collaboration, and align messaging across stakeholders, boards, and teams.

“If you discover what you're responding to in any area of life, you can make things better.”

Key Takeaways

  • The story a person tells themself affects how they interpret a situation and what they do next.

  • Leaders communicate more clearly when they pause long enough to understand what they are responding to. That pause helps them act on the real issue instead of their immediate reaction.

  • Leaders need to decide what to engage with in a conversation. Choosing what to pick up—and what to leave aside—changes the direction of the exchange.

  • Centering the outcome can guide responses, ensuring that communication moves people toward a favorable result.
