The Big Idea: Maintaining Trust When Everything Feels Uncertain

Lisandro frames uncertainty as the new normal in the workplace. While older generations expected stability, newer ones have experienced the opposite: layoffs, restructurings, and seemingly endless periods of change. To maintain trust, leaders must communicate in a way that is authentic, honest, and direct.

Rather than waiting to send out the perfect message, Lisandro favors quickly explaining the “why” and “why now,” and keeping people updated so they know what to expect at each phase of a transformation. Additionally, he emphasizes that it’s critical to approach communication as a two-way dialogue and be willing to listen.

"Whatever we put out there, however beautiful, if people don't feel heard, if they don't feel their emotions are taken into consideration, it's not going to work."
Lisandro Castaño
Director, Corporate Development Communications at Johnson & Johnson

Key Takeaways

  • Communicating quickly and clearly builds trust. People would rather hear an honest account of what’s happening, and why, as soon as possible than receive a polished message that’s too little, too late.

  • One size does not fit all when communicating. Understand who your audience is, and adjust your approach accordingly.

  • No matter how polished the communication, if people don’t feel heard or like their emotions are being taken into account, it won’t be effective. That “emotional ROI” is the hardest thing to measure.
